To niche, or not to niche?

Reader, despite the timing of this making it seem like it’s my New Year’s Resolution (it's not)…

I might be on the edge of making a change 😬

Now, wait a minute.

Before you let your mind go wild with thoughts like:

Wait, are you leaving copywriting?
You’re so obsessed with storytelling, how could you possibly let it go?
Girl, I didn’t sub to your emails just to have you give up on me!

…it’s not like THAT!

But I was introduced to a new perspective last month and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since.

So naturally, I had to share it with you 😎

We often hear about how we absolutely *must* niche down in our biz to be successful, right?

And sure, while there are some people out there preaching that we shouldn’t niche down…

The majority, in fact, think we should.

But what if all this niching down stuff is just keeping us from accessing our full potential?

What if it’s keeping us from welcoming in new opportunities, or from growing and expanding?

Hmmm… Just like the 9-5 did 🤔

So what if, instead of focusing on a niche…

You focus on a vision.

Let that sink in for a second.

Does that excite you too? Not sure yet?

Okay, I’ll guess I’ll expand on this a bit 😉

Maybe you like the idea of honing in on one thing.

But being multi-passionate (like me!) or easily distracted or bored or whatever else you can use to describe me (or you!)…

It’s hard to feel completely fulfilled focusing on just ONE thing.

There are so many topics out there to dig into, so many corners of our brains to crack open, and so many people whose lives will benefit greatly from having YOU in it.

But if we keep ourselves narrowed into a tight, constricting niche, who knows what opportunities we’ll be missing out on!

I personally love learning, exploring, growing…

Which is why leaving teaching and starting my career in copywriting was so appealing.

To make a living learning about what you do and what your audience needs so I can help you tell the most kick-ass stories that help you form TRUE connection?

Um, yes please!

But (uh oh, there’s a “but” 😅) I’ve been focusing a lot on self-improvement lately…

Spending even MORE time in nature, deepening my yoga practice, and making reflection, meditation, and observation a higher priority…

And it’s making me wonder if I “should” be doing more.

Now, by doing more, I don’t necessarily mean physically increasing my workload.

That would just be silly.

But “more” as in, increasing the opportunity for fulfillment in what I do.

Like, honing in on my vision and making sure my work allows me to be fully present…

So the projects I take on and the clients I work with feel more purposeful and meaningful.

And to me, a niche might be a liittttle too restraining for that.

I always resisted the idea of niching down anyway (ask anyone who’s worked closely with me lately 😂)...

But this idea of a vision really has me thinking of some fun possibilities.

If you’re still wondering what the difference is, Veronica Llorca-Smith is the one who put this little vision bug in my ear.

And a couple of her examples might help this make a little more sense:

“A niche is fitness and wellness. A vision is helping people be, look, and feel their best.
A niche is coaching writers. A vision is to empower writers to become best-selling authors.”

While a niche is more of a “thing,” a vision is more free-flowing.

It grows and pivots and evolves right alongside our own journey of doing the same (because as entrepreneurs, and um HUMANS, aren’t we always growing, pivoting, and evolving?).

And the way I see it, it also gives me “permission” to think outside the box when it comes to what I do and who I serve.

As I think about this more, I’m feeling inspired to adopt this idea of a vision instead of trying to force myself into a niche.

I’m not sure what to call it quite yet…

But you can bet your ass I’m going to start playing with it and see what happens!

So Reader, when it comes to you and YOUR biz…

What would happen if you challenged your niche?

Or if you reflected on the focus of your biz, and started welcoming in the idea of a vision too?

What would that look like?
How would things change?

Because while the rest of the online world is niching down…

What if we get to become part of the select few who decide to expand beyond the rigid walls of a niche?

And what if, by focusing on a vision, you’re giving yourself permission to grow and evolve in how you show up for the people you serve?

Annnndddd what if… (just one more here, bear with me 🤓) your vision actually helps differentiate you from your competition too.

Because when you’re clear on your vision, that’ll come through in the stories you share, right?

(right!!)

The vision goes beyond a static “thing.”

It becomes the living, breathing mission you live by.

And that just sounds SO MUCH freakin’ cooler and WAY more meaningful to me.

So what do you think?

Are you feeling ready to embrace this idea of a vision too?

If so, I’d love to hear it!

Hit reply to share your current niche and your new vision.

I promise, I’m working on mine too 😊

I think a little woo is healthy, Reader. Just because something can’t be 100% proven doesn’t mean it’s not real. (I mean, c’mon, do we really think that we, as humans, have a concrete understanding of this entire universe??? 🙄) But believing in omnipotent forces, energy, manifestation… any of that kind of stuff, can be a great source of inspiration for self-reflection and growth. That’s exactly why I got a new oracle deck not too long ago. Are the cards I pull meant to be? Were my hands...

How often do you find yourself unable to focus, Reader? (I swear, if you’re thinking uuum, never? …well, consider yourself lucky. And I’m jealous.) Maybe it’s the stretch of hot weather. Or the extra work I took on. Or the yoga biz I’ve been pouring more energy into. …Or a combo: all of the above plus factors I haven’t even identified yet 😅 Life just feels hard right now. It’s making me feel Stir crazy Overwhelmed A bit frazzled even And I find that I’ve had to be more intentional about how I...

Reader, I know I’ve been on an anti niche, pro vision kick lately but… I swear on everything that I love: When you take this whole “following a vision” thing seriously, AMAZING stuff starts to fall into place. If you peeped my last email, there was a WHOLE lot of talk about how my vision, my purpose, is to feel deeply connected and help others feel it too… No matter how I get them there. Could be copywriting.Could be yoga.Could be… both? At the same time? 🤔 Yes, yes it could be. I recently...
